Understanding Staking Without the Jargon

Validators, delegation, epochs, and rewards — the staking vocabulary explained for curious readers.

Staking articles assume you already know what a validator does and why epochs matter. This guide breaks down the vocabulary so you can follow the conversation.

Why staking exists

Blockchains need participants to agree on which transactions are valid. On Solana, validators run specialised computers that propose and vote on blocks. Staking is how the network chooses which validators are trusted and how honest behaviour is rewarded.

Key terms

Validator — A node operator who processes transactions and votes on the ledger state. Validators earn rewards for reliable participation.

Delegation — You can assign your SOL to a validator without giving them ownership. Your tokens remain yours; the validator uses your stake weight in voting.

Stake account — A separate on-chain account where delegated SOL is held. It is distinct from your everyday spending wallet.

Epoch — A period (roughly two to three days) during which the validator schedule and rewards are calculated. At the end of each epoch, staking rewards are distributed.

Vote account — The on-chain account a validator uses to cast votes. When you delegate, you point your stake at a validator’s vote account.

Commission — The percentage of staking rewards a validator keeps before passing the rest to delegators. You will see this listed on validator dashboards.

Inflation — New SOL issued by the protocol, partly used to fund staking rewards. Articles discussing “inflation rate” refer to this scheduled issuance.

What staking is not

Reading about staking vocabulary does not mean you should stake. Staking involves locking tokens, understanding validator reliability, and accepting network-level risks. Our role is educational — we explain the words, not whether staking suits your situation.
